Run Every Neighborhood (2016)

Similar but much better than the Community District project in 2013.  Ran the boundary of every neighborhood in NYC.  Boundaries are of course subject to great debate and opinion so I set some ground rules.  Boundaries had to be defined by the NYC Department of City Planning and mapped via a curated Google Map Maker Tool that unfortunately no longer exists.

I did manage to run the boundaries of 252 neighborhoods.  Every neighborhood in 4 boroughs and 13 on Staten Island.  Each route and run delivered a truer sense of neighborhoods and highlighted similarities and differences spanning architecture, terrain, transpo options, languages, sounds and smells, street scenes, parking, people, and even bodega drink offerings.  A truly fascinating experience.

As part of this project I also adopted one originally created by ultra-runner Phil McCarthy http://longdistancevoyager.blogspot.com/  and promoted and organized by Milo and the Calf  https://miloandthecalf.com/

The “runnable bridges” of NYC.  There are 92 bridges that span natural waterways AND allow pedestrian crossing.  I managed to run across all but two (Verrazano and Bayonne on Staten Island remain my white whales).   Of note, the George Washington Bridge was the most majestic, the Gowanus canal bridges the funkiest, and the Triboro/RFK was by far the scariest.   If you’ve run the Queens segment you know what I mean.
